What Happens During an In-Person EMF Assessment

Illustrated consultant explaining a meter reading to two homeowners on a couch

Booking someone to come into your home is a bigger step than reading a blog post.

It is reasonable to want to know exactly what you are signing up for.

Here is how an in-person EMF Aware assessment works, from first contact to the list you are left with.

Who comes to your home

Your assessment is done by Mitch Marchand, B.Sc. EE, or Riun Ashlie. Both work to the same measurement protocol, and you get the same report either way.

EMF Aware has been measuring homes since 2011, more than 1,000 of them. That experience, together with Building Biology training, matters because many of the most useful findings are electrical rather than wireless, and they are easy to miss unless you have seen them many times before.

Before the visit

When you get in touch, we ask three things:

  1. Where the home is, and roughly how big
  2. Which rooms you are most concerned about
  3. What prompted the question

From that, you get a straight answer about whether an assessment makes sense for you, and a price. Cost depends mostly on the size of the home and how much of it you want covered. The assessment page shows typical ranges.

How long it takes. A typical home takes 4 to 6 hours to complete an EMF assessment. Smaller homes, apartments and condos can take less time. Homes with three or more bedrooms, or a large amount of square footage, can take longer.

Buying a home rather than living in one? A shorter pre-purchase EMF inspection is built for that.

During the visit

We start with a conversation

What you have noticed, what you have already tried, and how your household uses the home. Where people sleep, work and spend long stretches of time shapes where we focus.

We measure the rooms you use most

We cover the high-use areas of the home, with sleeping areas as the highest priority, along with offices, nurseries and living spaces. In each area we measure:

  • AC magnetic fields from wiring, panels, meters and nearby power lines
  • AC electric fields from building wiring, including body voltage measurements in sleeping areas
  • Radiofrequency from Wi-Fi, phones, smart meters, appliances and outside sources
  • Dirty electricity (microsurge electropollution) on the home’s circuits

We trace readings to their sources

A reading is only useful once we know what causes it. That can mean switching circuits on and off, checking the panel, following metal plumbing, or identifying which device is transmitting.

You see the numbers as we go

You are welcome to follow along. We explain what each reading means, how it compares with exposure guidelines used in Canada and elsewhere, including the Building Biology guidelines for sleeping areas, and whether it is worth acting on.

Clients often tell us this is the part they value most:

“Methodical and thorough in his approach yet took the time to answer my many questions.” Marcus, Calgary

Some fixes happen on the spot

Turning off a transmitter, changing a setting, moving a device or repositioning a bed can often be done while we are there, and re-measured right away.

What you have at the end

  • Your measurements, room by room
  • The sources behind the readings that matter
  • A prioritized action list: what to fix first, what can wait, and what to leave alone
  • Practical options at different levels of effort and cost

One client put it this way:

“He gave his ‘in a perfect world’ recommendations and also provided some more accessible options to improve our space in the meantime.” SK, Calgary

Where a fix needs a trade, such as a wiring correction, we explain what the electrician needs to do and why.

What an assessment is not

It is not a medical diagnosis. We will not tell you EMF is making you ill. That is a question for your practitioner.

It is not a sales visit. We do not arrive with a trunk full of products. Most useful findings are fixed with a correction, a setting or a better location.

How to prepare

  • Make a short list of the rooms and concerns that matter most to you
  • If you can, have all the adults in the home there for the assessment. Hearing the findings directly from the consultant works best for the more technical information, and it avoids details getting lost when one person has to pass them on to everyone else
  • Make sure we can reach the electrical panel
  • Leave the home running as it normally does, so we measure what you actually live with
  • Have any meters or products you have already bought handy, if you would like our view on them

After the visit

If you make changes, a follow-up measurement confirms they worked. As one client said:

“Follow-up assessment is essential. It helped me see if I did my EMF Mitigation correctly.” Mel L., Calgary
